After, I love You

Too many times I’ve forgotten,
To say the words that would make you stay.
Perhaps they would’ve been faked,
Or uttered by selfishness.
Instead calm and collected,
I stood without thought,
Forgetting to listen,
And ignoring my heart’s wish,
To one day, find happiness.
I wanted, and I tried to understand,
To comprehend the value of you,
With your sarcastic wit,
And comforting smile,
I should have been able to say “I love you.”
But only silence followed behind,
Marching to the tune of loneliness,
For what you sought I could not provide,
Loving you was not my fate.
Instead walking alone,
And basking in the light of the single life,
Now that my dear is my cross to bear.
